How to choose

The routes visit different places, so start from the stops you want to see.

  • Places: compare the stops in the table. Itineraries differ by operator, so check the exact list before you book.
  • Time: the west listings state their day length; most east listings we checked do not, so ask the operator.
  • Walking: operators rate both routes between moderate and high, and disagree on which is harder. The steepest parts are the stairs down to Kelingking Beach on the west and to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach on the east.
  • Weather: operators say sea and weather conditions can change the plan on both routes.

Logistics

Every tour we checked crosses by fast boat from Sanur. Some include hotel pickup in Bali, others meet you at Sanur Harbour, and options that start on Nusa Penida itself are shorter.

Foreign visitors pay a Klungkung Regency levy for the Nusa Penida islands, now collected through the “One Gate One Destination” system, and the Bali provincial levy. Some listings include the island levy in the tour price.

Questions

Which is better, the west or the east tour?

Neither is better for everyone: the routes visit different places. Choose the west for Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong, and the east for Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach and Teletubbies Hill. The table shows the stops each listing confirms.

Can you see the west and the east on the same tour?

Some operators sell a combined tour of both sides. We have not compared combined tours yet.

How hard are the stairs at Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach?

Hard enough to plan for. Indonesia’s tourism ministry calls the descent to Kelingking Beach steep and dangerous, and operators describe long staircases down to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach that can be slippery after rain. If stairs are a concern, ask the operator whether the tour goes down to the beaches.

How do day tours get to Nusa Penida?

Every tour we checked crosses by fast boat from Sanur. Operators say sea and weather conditions can change the crossing and the itinerary.

Do the tours include hotel pickup?

Some do. Among the tours we checked, some include pickup in South Bali, with an extra charge for areas such as Ubud or Canggu, and others meet you at Sanur port.

How we compared

We compared 2 options on 4 details. Each value links to its numbered source, and a detail we could not verify says “Not confirmed” instead of a guess.

How we compare tours

We read the public itineraries of tours sold on booking platforms and by local operators, and the official pages of the Klungkung Regency, the Bali provincial government and Indonesia’s tourism ministry. Each value in the table links to its sources with the date we checked them. Where the listings disagree or say nothing, the table says so instead of guessing.
