Quick answer
Book a full day to reach places across the island, such as the north or the east, or to fit several stops into one trip. Book a half day for a few places near where you stay: it costs less, but operators limit it to nearby areas and charge more beyond them. Either way you pay per car, not per person.

How to choose
Start from where you want to go, then count the hours.
- Far places: the north, the east and Amed are long drives, and operators add a surcharge for them even on a full day. A half day does not cover them.
- A few nearby stops: temples, beaches or Ubud close to your hotel fit a half day, inside the area each operator sets.
- Your group: the price is for the car, so it is the same for one passenger or a full car. Check how many people and bags the car takes.
- What is extra: entrance tickets are always extra; parking is included at some operators and not at others; extra hours cost more.

Operators pick you up at your hotel in the main areas of South Bali and Ubud; outside them, ask before you book.
You choose the stops: the operators sell the car and the driver for a set number of hours, not a fixed tour. Agree the plan with the operator before the day, so the far places and the surcharges are clear.

Is a private driver in Bali priced per person or per car?
Per car. The operators we checked publish one price for the car and the driver, whatever the number of passengers, up to the seats in the car.
What does a day with a driver include?
The car, an English-speaking driver and fuel. Entrance tickets are extra, and meals are usually not included. Parking depends on the operator.
Can I go to Amed or the north of Bali on a half day?
Not at the operators we checked: their half day covers nearby areas only, and a longer trip is charged as a full day or with an extra fee.
What happens if the day runs longer?
Operators charge each extra hour on top of the price, at a rate they publish.
